By taking simple steps and precautions, an injury can often be prevented.
- Falls: In Massachusetts, falls are the leading cause of TBI-related deaths, inpatient hospitalizations, observation stays, and emergency-room visits. Young children and older adults are most at risk. Use of safety gates and window locks (children) and grab bars and non-slip mats (older adults) can reduce the number of head injuries.
- Motor Vehicle Crashes: Motor vehicle crashes are the number one cause of brain injury among children and young adults. Seat belts and proper use of car seats can significantly reduce the number of head injuries.
- Pedestrian Injuries: Each year, about 84,000 children and adults are injured as pedestrians. Many receive serious brain injuries. Parental supervision, education, and obeying the rules of the road can reduce the number of head injuries.
- Sports Concussion: Concussion is a mild brain injury caused by a blow to the head or body that causes the brain to move rapidly inside the skull. Approximately 60,000 concussions occur in high school sports annually. Educating coaches, trainers, athletes, first responders, and parents about the signs of concussion and the importance of getting quick and appropriate medical care can significantly reduce the risk of permanent brain injury to our athletes. Visit the The Sports Legacy Institute and the CDC for additional information on sports concussion.
