Creating Therapeutic Environments for Individuals with Acquired Brain Injury: Kaizen

Universal Supports are components of a therapeutic environment where individuals with Acquired
Brain Injury can recover and progress toward maximum independence. Kaizen is a system of reducing cognitive and physical load in the workplace to improve organizational outcomes. These same principles can be applied to the home environment to increase independence and participation. This presentation will introduce the Kaizen philosophy, with a focus on the visual spatial systems that can significantly improve the functionality of spaces used by individuals with brain injuries.

Objectives:
1. Participants will be able to explain at least 3 ways the principles of Kaizen can improve life participation for individuals recovering from brain injuries
2. Participants will be able to identify at least one way to adapt their home to reduce cognitive load during activities of daily living
3. Participants will be able to develop a consistent visual language for any space they are adapting
